How to schedule an assignment in Google Classroom

How to schedule a Google Classroom assignment in advance — using Google Classroom's built-in option for one-off posts, and Class Add-Ons for recurring assignments.

For teachers who want a clear guide to scheduling assignments in Google Classroom — both the native advance-scheduling option and recurring scheduling with a third-party tool.

Two ways to schedule an assignment in Google Classroom

There are two distinct methods for scheduling assignments in Google Classroom, depending on whether you need a single future post or a recurring series.

Method 1 — Native Google Classroom scheduling (one-off)

Google Classroom includes a built-in option to schedule any assignment, material, or announcement to publish at a future date and time.

Step 1 — Open Google Classroom and go to the Classwork tab.

Step 2 — Click ”+ Create” and choose the type of post: Assignment, Quiz assignment, Question, or Material.

Step 3 — Add the title, instructions, and any attachments. Set a due date if required.

Step 4 — Instead of clicking “Assign”, click the arrow next to the Assign button. Choose Schedule from the dropdown.

Step 5 — Set the date and time for the assignment to publish. Confirm and save.

The assignment will publish automatically at the time you set. It appears in your students’ Classwork feeds as if you had posted it manually at that moment.

Note: This method works for individual posts only. There is no option to repeat the same assignment on a regular basis.

Method 2 — Class Add-Ons for recurring assignments

If you need the same assignment to publish on a weekly, monthly, or termly schedule, Class Add-Ons Scheduler adds the recurrence layer that Google Classroom does not provide.

Step 1 — Sign in at Class Add-Ons with your Google account.

Step 2 — Create a new scheduling task. Choose your Google Classroom class.

Step 3 — Enter the assignment title and instructions.

Step 4 — Set the recurrence pattern: daily, weekly, monthly, or termly.

Step 5 — Set the start date, publish time, and stop date (for end of term).

Step 6 — Add a due date: fixed or relative (for example, 7 days after each post).

Step 7 — Attach any links or Google Drive files.

Step 8 — Save. Each recurring post publishes automatically and you receive an email confirmation.
